Each day, I encounter more scenes than I can possibly embrace. Wildflowers growing along the roadside, a thread of spider silk drifting in the breeze, tools lined up against the wall and sheets drying outside. Among these ordinary surroundings, there are moments that stand out—appearing by chance through shifts of light, wind, or mood and disappearing just as quickly. The moment that catches my eye may occur in the brief interval before I even recognise what I am looking at.
Images stored in our memory differ from the scenes that were before our eyes; they are indistinct. Even memories I believe I recall vividly contain aspects that blur and slip in and out of view. At times, we even generate parts of our memories and come to believe them as the truth. Memory is an ambiguous realm that holds both fact and fiction. And yet, the core framework of those memories exists—separate from that ambiguity, or perhaps lying within it.

日々、抱えきれないほどの景色を見る。道路にこぼれ生える草花や、風に揺られる蜘蛛の糸、軒先に並ぶ道具や外干しのシーツ。ありふれた光景のなかで、際立つ一瞬がある。その瞬間は、光、風、気分などの偶然に現れる。目を惹く瞬きは、それが何であるか知るまでの、ほんのわずかな時間に起こっているのだろうか。
記憶の中のイメージは、目の前の光景とは違い、曖昧だ。はっきりと思い出せる記憶でさえ、いくつかはぼやけてしまい、よく見えない。それどころか、時折私たちは記憶の一部を生成し、それを真実だと思い込む。記憶は事実と虚像の両方をはらむ曖昧なものである。しかし、その核となるものは、曖昧さとは別に、あるいは、曖昧さの中に潜んでいる。
